Your cookie banner is there. But does it actually work?

Many small business websites load advertising and analytics trackers before the visitor clicks anything, or keep tracking after they click “Refuse”. Regulators check exactly this.

The problem: small firms do get fined

France’s data protection authority, the CNIL, publishes its sanctions. Its list includes small and medium companies fined between EUR 3,000 and EUR 15,000 in 2025–2026 where cookie consent was among the breaches found, for example a distance-selling company (EUR 3,000, June 2025) and an event-ticketing company (EUR 15,000 and an injunction, March 2026).

The usual failures are technical, not legal: trackers firing before consent, a “Refuse” button that does not stop them, or a consent tool that is installed but not connected to your tags.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need access to my website for the free check?

No. The quick check is done from the outside, exactly as a visitor or a regulator would see your site.

Which consent tools do you work with?

Common tools such as Cookiebot, Usercentrics, iubenda, Axeptio, Didomi or the one already built into your platform. We usually fix your existing setup rather than sell you a new tool.

Will my analytics and ads tracking stop working?

Tracking will only run for visitors who agree. We set it up so consenting visitors are still measured correctly.

Is this legal advice?

No. This is a technical check of how your website behaves. For legal questions, for example about your privacy policy or legal basis for processing, please consult a lawyer or your data protection officer.

Which countries do you cover?

Businesses across Europe. Reports are in English.

Important: SME Ready provides technical testing and configuration. It is not legal advice and does not guarantee that a regulator or court will consider your website compliant.
